Agriculture, food processing and tourism drive the local economy, with these core sectors now enhanced by emerging clusters of electronics manufacturing, marine research, business services, printing and publishing, and global space communications.

The region's agricultural community produces more than $2.6 billion in fresh and processed foods each year, a harvest that accounts for more than 10% of California's total farm output. The area's mild climate, rich soils, and advanced growing techniques have contributed to an expansion in specialty agriculture and nursery operations.

The California State Department of Tourism estimates that visitors spend over $1 billion annually enjoying the dramatic coastline, unique communities, and world-famous golf links of the Central Coast.
